The chemical industry plays an important role in solving problems such as climate change, safe food and health care. At HZ students acquire a broad general knowledge of chemistry and biology. The first two years introduce students to the professional field. In the third year, they specialize in either Applied Chemistry or Life Sciences.
Applied Chemistry deals with the composition and quality of raw materials and products, such as drinks, shampoo, medicine and food. Students analyze organic materials and study environmental problems. They also learn to use fluorescence imaging techniques.
In Life Sciences students study subjects such as bacteriology and virology, epidemiology and immuno-biology, the development of modern vaccines and the application of DNA techniques to identify micro-organisms.
Two semesters of work placement in a company are part of the Bachelor program. Students can take advantage of the excellent network that HZ has with companies and research centres. Students who specialize in Applied Chemistry will be trained to work in laboratory research, in the product development or quality control for example. Students who specialize in Life Sciences may find a work placement in a medical laboratory.
