  • Description

Hotel Mopan was opened in May of 1973 by Belizean born Jean U Shaw nee Weir J.P., M.B.E. (Member of the British Empire) and her husband Scottish born Thomas Shaw (Tom). They bought the original building from Belize Estate. The building was an old colonial style timber home at the time. The story behind it is actually quite a romantic one but suffice it to say Tom won a lot of points with his gesture to find an ideal location for Jean to build her dream.

Hotel Mopan has been through a lot of renovations over the years dating back to the late 70s, early 80s, late 90s and mid 2003 for the most major renovations. In 2003, a lot of the old timber building was changed to cement and while the basic idea remained the same, some of the elements like the entrance was changed and a Patio was added.

Located on the oldest street in downtown Belize City, Hotel Mopan is located near to water taxis, bus terminals, historical sites, museums, Belize Tourism Board, restaurants, shops, the market and lots more. Most of the aforementioned places are within 20 mins walking distance at the most. We are a block away from the sea front but you can see the Carribean Sea from various areas of the hotel. Home to 14 rooms, we have divided our rooms into three types: Standard, Patio and Balcony.

There is a small bar which serves water, beer and sodas and has a small dining room for gatherings/meetings and the like. Our kitchen is momentarily closed until further notice but arrangements can be made for large groups if needed.

There are two internet stations at the Front Desk at a nominal charge and we also offer wireless internet free of charge to all guests. We do not, however, offer technical support if your machine does not pick up the wireless internet.

From the third floor, there is a winding stair up to the roof top which offers a great view of the Caribbean Sea and the surrounding City area. It is a great place to take in sunsets and sunrises either through the viewpoint of your camera or the viewpoint of your soul, your eyes. :-)

Hotel Mopan is a budget hotel and we cater to tourists of all nationalities including our locals who want to enjoy a taste of Belize City and its history at a reasonable cost. We invite you to come and enjoy what we have to offer... to appreciate our culture, embrace our history and leave with a little piece of Belize and Hotel Mopan in your heart. We promise to try our best to make your stay in Belize City and pleasant memory locked away in the treasured moments of your mind.
