Description

The SASA Academy is situated in a remote village in Uttaranchal state, at a height of 6000 feet.

The SASA Academy, which was established in March 2000, is run by the Serve And Share Association, a registered charitable institution in India, which runs various development projects such as school, child sponsorship, adult literacy and community development & child development training programs. The Academy has classes running from kindergarten to class lV.

The region is really remote. With poor roads, no electricity, cold weather in winter, and with low salaries compared to the cities, it is hard to retain quality local teachers. SASA does have few dedicated teachers, but there is always a need for good English and Science teachers to supplement their work.

SASA can accommodate two volunteers through out the year. Volunteers teach what they are able to. Normally this is English, but Maths and Science teachers are also needed.

Qualifications

If you have no experience of teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), you will need to take a short course in TEFL (an intensive weekend course would be the minimum requirement). A love of children and an ability to communicate skills and knowledge to them is essential. Our volunteers must also be mature, patient, tolerant and diplomatic.

HELP realizes its aims by enabling responsible and committed people from the developed world to: - sponsor young people with the potential to benefit from a school or college education, but without the means to do so. - make a donation to provide grants to individual students, and also to schools and health clinics that lack the means to acquire the materials or premises required to provide a satisfactory service to their communities. - undertake short-term assignments as volunteers in support of educational and training projects
