  • Description

In the context of Mombasa, Kenya--a city that is both rich with history and situated at the forefront of regional, economic development--students will explore the concepts of resilience and innovation, examining a variety of economic, environmental, and cultural challenges facing local communities.

Students from Harvard and East African universities will work collaboratively to explore the ancient and contemporary strategies that communities employ to respond to challenges.

The program, a collaboration between Harvard University and Aga Khan University, fosters an ongoing dialog that pushes students to go beyond their assumptions and the available literature to discover the fascinating strength of local resilience and the complexity and creativity of community innovation.

Based at the Aga Khan Academy, a premiere boarding school in Mombasa, the 8-week program is taught by a team of Harvard and Aga Khan professors, as well as a supporting local and international staff. Twelve students from Harvard join 12 East African students in class discussions, collaborative work, language partnerships, and a final project that pairs an East African student with a Harvard student.

  • Harvard Summer School Study Abroad Programs's Mission Statement

Expect a true Harvard experience, engage your intellectual curiosity with Harvard faculty, and study in a range of fields. Harvard study abroad programs are both demanding and rewarding. Because programs are led exclusively by faculty, students find the same Harvard-quality education they encounter on campus in Cambridge. Programs span 5 to 10 weeks and are limited enrollment. All programs are 8 credits, and the credits are accepted toward degrees at most colleges and universities. Harvard study abroad programs are selective. To apply, students must be at least 18, have completed 1 year of college or be a first-year student, and be in good academic standing. Admission criteria are outlined on each program webpage.
