  • Description

The International Summer Session (ISS) at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS), offered continuously for nine years since its establishment in 2003, provides a unique opportunity to all those who want to deepen their understanding of Korean society and the sources of its current trends. International students may increase their Korean language proficiency through ISS language classes, and domestic Korean students have the opportunity to enhance their English language proficiency by studying in an international environment where all courses are taught in English.

One of the unique features of the HUFS ISS program is that both international and domestic Korean students study side-by-side in the same classrooms on a daily basis, sharing in project work, extra-curricular and free-time activities. ISS international students come from a variety of countries, either as independent students or as exchange students from partner universities in Sweden, France, Germany, Poland, Spain, Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Italy, Jordan, India, Mexico, the U.S., Canada, and Australia. This co-mingling of students of many national origins enriches the learning environment for all.

ISS provides students with a carefully planned curriculum and the courses are taught by some of the most prominent scholars in the field of Korean Studies, many of whom are invited from prestigious foreign universities to teach for the summer session. The faculty and students together create a cosmopolitan atmosphere which is conducive to an in-depth understanding of Korean society.

Courses are offered in the areas of Korean history, performing arts, literature, economy and business, politics, contemporary society and culture, as well as language. The summer session is open to currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to independent scholars interested in the field of Korean Studies.

    Application Deadline: May, 2013

  • Highlights

    Cosmopolitan
During the International Summer Session at HUFS, which has been nationally ranked as the most cosmopolitan campus in Korea, students have many opportunities to interact with foreign students from various countries as well as local Korean students. The ISS at HUFS is the only program of its kind in Korea which integrates both domestic Korean students and students from overseas in the same classes.

    World-class faculty
The ISS invites many world-renowned scholars in Korean Studies to teach at the summer session. Together with the participating HUFS faculty, these invited professors from prestigious foreign universities make the ISS educational experience truly competitive in the age of globalization.

Field Activities: Hands-on introduction to Korean society and culture

Students can gain insight into Korean history, cultural practices, and the operations of some of the world's leading corporations which have led Korea's advancement into cutting-edge technology. ISS professors provide students with a stimulating array of Co-curricular Field Trips, company visits, cultural workshops and special lectures related to the subjects they teach.

A program of "Extended Field Activities" is also organized. These are trips by bus to locales outside Seoul which contain sites of exceptional social, historical and cultural significance (DMZ, overnight temple stay, Gwangju, Gyeongju. etc.), organized on the weekends. The cost of one Extended Field Trip is included in the tuition fee, and students may choose to enroll in other optional Extended Field Trip for a nominal at-cost fee.

    ISS Buddy Program
The ISS Buddy Program provides an opportunity to build friendships between local HUFS students and ISS international students through informal interactions outside the classroom, both on-campus and off-campus. These include weekly Korean film evenings with typical Korean refreshments, an initiation session to taekwondo, and an introduction to the hot spots of student night life. The buddy team also assists the ISS international students with adaptation to local Korean lifestyle by helping them obtain mobile phones, accompanying them on the subway if necessary, introducing them to good shopping districts, and giving them walking tours of interesting neighborhoods. One member of the buddy team will be living in the on-campus dorm to provide assistance as needed to the international students on an on-call basis. ISS students can also request a language exchange buddy for the duration of the five-week session.

    Personalized education in small-size classes
Class size does not usually exceed 12 students, which allows a personalized education that meets students' individual needs.
