  • Description

    About the Course
The one-year honours design programme has been designed in response to an increasing industrial demand for honours degree level employees with design skills relating to interior architecture, especially with regard to space planning and visualisation. The graduates who successfully complete this programme will be able to design interiors in terms of space, materials, detailing and atmosphere. They will be able to sketch, draught, produce advanced computer aided visualizations, including walk-throughs, using the latest software packages, apply advanced technology and manage design projects. The degree programme has two main orientations: professional and academic. The syllabus, designed by the Faculty staff in consultation with the leading interior architects and designers in Ireland, reflects both orientations.

    Progression
Holders of this qualification may wish to pursue a postgraduate diploma or masters programme in interior architecture.

    Careers
Graduates of this course will be able to work as an interior architect in architectural and design practices. On entering the workplace they will be equipped to undertake interior architectural projects and independently carry them through to completion. Typically graduates work on projects in commercial design (galleries, leisure complexes, retail units, hotels) and specialist conversion projects, some involving building conservation. Due to the extensive training in new methods of computer-visualisation including 3-D modelling, rendering and stimulations, there are also significant opportunities as CAD specialists.

  • Highlights

    There are six modules:

    Degree Projects
With the help of faculty staff you will select a major project. Students generally choose a large building or development and convert it for specialised use, using the latest techniques in computer-modelling to produce a simulation of the designed interiors.

    Advanced CAD
Students will be taught how to use the most advanced CAD packages and equipment to explore alternative design concepts and to advance their own 3D visualisation skills. In this module students will learn how to create and edit 3D computer models, and learn to apply texture and colour effects. Students will then light and animate their models to produce photo realistic representations of their design work.

    Design Theory
This module focuses on new design methods and how they apply to both the degree project and the development of student skills in space planning. Subjects will address design strategies, modular planning systems, design for sustainable interior, applied ergonomics, psychological and physical factors in the commercial world, architectural graphics and branding.

    Design Technology
The application of advanced and alternative technologies in the design of buildings and interiors is an essential element of students education. The module consists of lectures and seminars on topics ranging from sustainable materials to demountable and prefabricated systems, and from smart technology to intelligent building systems.

    Project Management
This module is structured to help students apply the principles of project management in planning and controlling design projects, formulating project goals, structuring and scheduling project tasks and breaking them down into components defined by function, quality, time scale and cost.

    Cultural Studies
This module examines the factors that influence the contemporary built environment, as well as reviewing the socio-economic, technological, cultural and political factors shaping Interior Architecture. A dissertation is also required, on a topic of the student's choice.
