Volunteers will be placed in a Santa Cruz Catholic school of nearly 2,000 pupils. The school only has 3 English teachers, so is in dire need of your help. There are 2 English classes a day, Monday through Friday, and an optional English workshop on Saturdays. Volunteers generally work from around 7:20am until around 12 noon, but hours change based on need.
Volunteer work includes but is not limited to:
- Assisting teachers with activities and classes
- Teaching English
- Physical education and/or Health education
- Organization of workshops, arts and crafts, and other activities
- Tutoring, and help with homework assignments
Volunteers are placed with Homestay families. Lodging and 3 meals a day are provided in the cost of the program. Meals are typically Bolivian in style and include vegetables and rice and occasionally chicken, fish and red meat. Vegetarians should not have a problem, simply notify your homestay upon arrival.
Santa Cruz is a fabulous and safe area of Bolivia. Volunteers are encouraged to explore the area as well as the country during their days off, which are generally Saturday and Sunday. Some highlights around Santa Cruz are Yvaga Guazu, an ecological park just 15 minutes outside the city, a nearby butterfly sanctuary, and La Rinconada, a beautiful rainforest lagoon that houses the largest rainforest lilypads in the world.
