ommedia dell'arte is a form of theatre that began in Italy in the 12th century but peaked in the 16th and 17th centuries. It is characterized by masked "types", the advent of the actress and improvised performances based on sketches or scenarios.
Participants learn the physical style of Commedia dell'Arte as we believe it was "then" and how it may be used "now" as a creative tool for actors, performers, directors and teachers. The goal of the workshops is for our participants to simultaneously experience the momentum, effort, historical, physical, joyful and risky style of the Commedia dell' Arte.

Scenario & Improvisation
Much of our scenario and improvisation work will be taken from our translation of three of Flaminio Scala scenarios believed to be performed by the legendary Gelosi Company 1572 to 1604.
Classes will be held in Pier Studios at Pier 40 in Hudson River Park in New York, NY.
Florence, Italy: The course is geared toward understanding the theatrical experience as a fun and useful game for developing your own creativity and expressiveness as well as increasing your artistic experience in relation to a group. The course will help to develop the exchange of physical energy and creativity amongst the students in the group.
The course focuses on reading, understanding, and interpreting scenes, characters and stories contained in major classical texts, reviving them from an environment some 500 years ago. This course allows students to see the many emotions connected to time, space, love, fame, war, power, justice, friendship, violence and jealousy that remain in our world today. Theater as an intellectual exercise and as a strongly emotional experience will be explored in this course.
The course will take place in Florence and combine body expression/language and acting. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the characters of Commedia and to dance to a choreographed Renaissance noble Italian dance. There is also the possibility of doing a performance in Florence.
