Canberra is an ideal base to explore Australia. The South Coast is only 1.5 hours drive from Canberra where you will find magnificent beaches, lakes and rivers. The area encompasses a range of National Parks and State Forests where there is great camping and hiking away from the crowds. The clubs and restaurants of Melbourne, and Sydneys city beaches and harbor views are also easily accessible from Canberra, thanks to frequent bus services between the three cities. The Australian Alps or Snowy Mountains are just a two-hour drive.

As part of the study abroad Orientation program UC organizes some great trips for their study abroad students. You could learn to surf on pristine beaches, see dolphins at home in Australian waters and go bushwalking through typical coastal wilderness at the south coast. Or you might head for the for the alpine town of Thredbo in Australia's Alps and walk to the top of the countrys highest mountain.
All students are members of the University of Canberra Union, which organizes social, cultural, faculty, hobby, and sporting activities throughout the year. Entertainment includes comedy performances, jazz and rock'n'roll bands, films, bar nights, art, café, and market 'daze.' There is an abundance of clubs and societies that you may join such as accounting, athletics, bible reading, dance, design, theatre, hockey, media, movies, netball, outdoors, scuba, skiing, swimming soccer, volleyball, rowing, surfing and waterpolo.
