Teach conversational English in a school project which provides affordable language courses while immersing yourself in urban Cambodian life.
The Global Volunteer Network gives you the opportunity to volunteer by teaching conversational English in Cambodia. This will allow you to help students improve their English skills while at the same time experiencing the culture of Cambodia.
The program is located in Cambodia's capital of Phnom Penh. Volunteers are accommodated together in a rented house. Volunteers work from Monday to Friday. The weekends are free for volunteers to explore the region. As well as this, volunteers will have time off in the middle of their program which will generally coincide with a Cambodian festival or holiday.
Aim
The aim of this project is to raise money for a local NGO working to improve livelihoods in rural communities in Cambodia. Students pay a small fee to attend the classes.
In the past, the money raised by the language centre has been used to improve water and sanitation, for small livestock and agriculture production and for community environmental awareness in rural Cambodia.
Teaching
In your first few weeks a teaching schedule will be put together for you. Each class lasts for 1 hour per day. You will take up to 5 of these classes. There is also 1-1 tuition which you may be involved in. Classes are run anytime between 6.30am - 12pm and 2pm to 8pm. Volunteers work a maximum of 25 hours per week; volunteers work about 5 hours per day.
There are ten levels of conversational English studied at the school where volunteers work. All students have at least a basic understanding of English. All students and teachers have books, from which to learn and teach. Each lesson is made up of a picture, a list of vocabulary and a range of activities/ exercises to put the vocabulary to use. The casual approach means teachers are encouraged to add their own exercises/ games to each class to make the classes more enjoyable. As well as these books, teaching guides are provided to help with planning.
The students are 13+ years old and the majority of students are young adults. Students pay a small fee to study at the school, in the knowledge that the profits go to the rural NGO. There are 10 students in each class.
Accommodation
Volunteers live together in a rented house. There are 6 bedrooms available for the volunteers. Each room has two beds and an ensuite (shower, toilet, sink). Volunteers share a room and you will be living with up to 10 other volunteers, mostly teachers, all working at the school.
The house has a TV and DVD player in the lounge with an ever growing DVD collection. There will be a cook at your placement who will prepare food for you. Volunteers are provided with three meals per day (7 days per week). These will be a mixture of Cambodian, Asian and Western food.
The volunteer accommodation is a 2 minute walk to the language centre. There is a local internet cafe 10 minutes walk from the volunteer house.
