  • Description

Join GVI on this whale and dolphin research project and visit the Western Mediterranean where you will research and help protect a variety of amazing marine mammals. Working in the Cetacean Sanctuary, a special marine-protected area located between Italy and France, you will be involved in researching the large-fin, sperm and pilot whales as well as the Risso's, striped and bottle nose dolphins. During your time in the Mediterranean you will participate in diverse field techniques, including individual photo-identification, remote tracking, distance sampling, behavioral sampling and acoustics. In addition to learning these new skills, you will also investigate the spatial distribution, ecology and behavior of these amazing cetaceans. Combine this with idyllic surroundings and good company, and this project gives you a truly unforgettable experience.

How does this program make a difference?

The aim of this GVI project is to provide a scientific basis for the management of the Pelagos Cetacean Sanctuary. Intensive research conducted on the project is highlighting the conservation needs of several cetacean species and has been raising remarkable awareness. Since 1992 almost 2,000 volunteers have participated in the research cruises. Living on board and co-operating to different aspects of the research creates a bond between researchers and volunteers, leading to a stronger commitment to environmental conservation.
