  • Description

Get involved in teaching children a range of different sports including soccer, basketball, tennis, athletics and rugby in townships that surround the beautiful city of Cape Town. You will assist teachers and GVI staff to run sports programs at the schools and to give more personal attention to students. These placements provide children with the opportunity to take part in sports activities which they would normally not have had the opportunity to experience. This GVI volunteer program runs in conjunction with community leaders and teachers. Without this program or volunteer assistance children may not have the opportunity to take part in such a variety of sport, due to lack of equipment, skill and supervision within the township.

How does this program make a difference?

One of the biggest challenges communities in South Africa are facing today is that their youth are often turning to drugs, alcohol and criminal activity. This is a direct result of lack of adult supervision and boredom amongst children within poverty stricken communities. This program aims to offer children within these communities the opportunity to take part in various sporting activities, which will encourage healthy living and provide them with a positive environment where they can develop their skills and hopefully provide an alternative to roaming the streets with nothing to do in the afternoons. The program will also offer opportunities for talented individuals to compete in local sports tournaments and events.
