  • Description

    The Wildlife Rescue Centre provides shelter for dislocated native animals. Most of these animals are confiscated from the illegal trade, or have been abandoned by previous owners once they were deemed unfit as pets. Once at the centre, they can live in their natural environment, some in large enclosures and others in semi-captivity, depending on their behaviour and ability to live peacefully with the other animals at the centre. The main aim of this initiative is to transition the animals, that are identified as eligible to a rehabilitation and reintroduction site, with the end goal being a release into the wild.

    Much of the centre is still under construction, and needs your help to; in reforestation, construction of new cages, huts, pathways and everything else on the list! This is an exciting opportunity to get in at the start and help create a wildlife sanctuary in the middle of the Amazon Jungle.

  • Highlights

    You will help in all ongoing construction. We have constructed the volunteer house and an outside kitchen and a couple of small cages. We hope to be able to start building some bigger cages for birds and monkeys soon. In addition you can help with mapping the area, setting up a water system, and participating in our reforestation project by replanting among other things, fruit trees that originate from the area. You don't need any qualifications in these areas, just the will and energy to help!

    Some activities you can get involved in include;

    * Enrichment of cages (depending on the species that we will be having. At the moment one capuchin monkey (Cebus apella) and a tayra (Eira barbara). This involves finding different methods with natural material (available locally) and studying the effects.

    * Reforestation; Research the methods of reforestation areas which were cultivated and implement changes.

    * Categorize the flora of the forest. For this you need to do pre-research of flora and fauna in literature, and be able to talk Spanish as you need to talk to locals a lot for the determination of species.

    * Categorizing fauna (e.g. birds, mammals, frogs, etc) (also for long term stay), with pre-research, and ability to speak Spanish.

    * Conservational education. Preparing information for the local school(s), as well as giving some lecture about conservation (in Spanish).

    * Teaching English at the local school.

    * Making folders or poster material for promotion of the project.

    The surroundings are beautiful. Here you will find yourself in the middle of the forest, nearby a river where you can swim. On the land there is a small waterfall with a small basin to bath. We are the first people to settle on this side of the river.
