Medical Careership in Argentina

Argentina
Share |

Location
Argentina: Buenos Aires

Term
Throughout the year

Dates
Ongoing

  • Description

Local doctors and nurses will assist you in learning about the practice of medicine in impoverished Argentine communities and neighborhoods, as well as imparting a perspective regarding the needs and concerns of the people who attend the Health Center.

You will have the opportunity to exchange questions and answers with patients and doctors, and get to know a real community and its daily struggles.

Primary healthcare or "salitas" - as we call it in Spanish - are the first level of access for the residents in poor neighbourhoods. This is why they are strategically located within these neighbourhoods, to be closer to the people. They are also the first place to go when you have a health problem and need professional assistance. In primary care centers there are family doctors, paediatricians, nurses, psychologists, dentists and social workers among other specialties. These Primary Healthcare Centers are free to all.

  • Highlights

You will help local staff to aid community members in improving their health and well-being, whilst searching for more efficient ways of preventing diseases.

You will shadow doctors and nurses in their daily activities, including taking vitals, treating injuries, interacting with patients, etc. You may also perform other duties when needed such as document translation and categorization of donated medications. This is a very flexible placement, what you get out will depend greatly upon what you put in.
