Length of Position
Minimum 5 months comittment

  • Description

It has became legend among TEFL teachers that over 300 million Chinese people have studied or are currently studying English. Accounting for almost a quarter of the country's population (and equal to the entire United States) this number represents an enormous opportunity for teachers who want to live in and experience the 'real China'.

This program provides you with a unique opportunity to get paid work in China as an English teacher. During your time in China, you will not only teach but have time to study the Chinese language and become immersed in Chinese culture. On weekends and school holidays you will have the chance to travel around the country. Best of all you will be able to choose where you would like to be based and what age group you would like to teach and the project will do their best to accommodate your preferences.

There will be 24/7 support throughout your placement.

  • Highlights

In order to help you become a committed and confident teacher, we will provide you with a 4-week Introduction and training period in Yangshuo county, a mountainous region in southeast China that is becoming increasingly popular with foreign backpackers.

The training will focus on how to Teach English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) specifically for Chinese students. In TEFL courses, you will learn the courses both theoretically and practically, including: thorough analysis on what makes a good teacher, classroom management, language awareness, intonation awareness, textbooks analysis, classroom activities and 'how to teach 4 skills': speaking, listening, reading and writing etc.

You will firstly practice teaching your peers and students in the local schools. This will help yo learn how to manage a class, what to teach and how teachers are expected to behave in a Chinese classroom. You will observe Chinese English teachers and experienced foreign teachers in classes for teenager students and adult learners. Throughout this training you will get to learn more about the Chinese culture, such as the family concept, different forms of greetings, school systems, student characteristics etc. You can also take advantage of Chinese calligraphy, paper crafting, or Taichi lessons. You'll get to go on various local excursions, such as boating on the beautiful Li River, cycling to the Big Banyan Tree, or climbing Moon Hill.

Optional weekend excursions to Beijing and nearby Guilin will give you the opportunity to get to know the project staff and your fellow participants, visit local schools, and explore iconic sites like the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. At the end of this training there will be a party to celebrate the group's achievements.

    The School Placement:
You will be advised of your placement during the training period. It is the schools that determine the placements based on your application form. Placement is guaranteed upon the completion of the training programne. Please note that placements cannot be changed once approved. In your school you will be assigned a contact person who will provide you with professional and personal support.

    The Schools:
In addition to Yangshuo, we work with schools and language training centers all over China, including Jilin Province, TianJin city, Hunan Province, Guangdong Province and other locations. The schools in China will vary greatly.

Schools are usually large, accommodating between 1,000 and 5,000 students. The schools are a mixture of private schools and government schools.
    * Schools offer many after school activities for students
    * Class sizes will vary and may be up to 50 students

    * Buildings are generally modern
    * Recreation facilities are generally of a high standard
    * Foreign teachers are not always common in schools

There are two semesters in each academic year. Each term is approximately 5 months in duration. The first term starts in early September. The second term starts in March and is dependent on the time of Chinese New Year, which is usually late January to late February. The summer breaks are 6-8 weeks in length from July to August. The winter breaks are 4 weeks in length from January to February. Some schools offer Summer Schools during the summer break.
