The NGO you will work with is a Honduran NGO based on the Caribbean island of Utila. Our principal aim is to protect the country's endangered fauna and flora through conservation initiatives.
Their strategies are to:
* provide a dynamic environmental education program
* develop sustainability based on scientific assessment
* impulse community engagement and participation
* create and strengthened the links between organisations working for the same aim.
Our principal project is currently to lead a reptile research and breeding station, in order to protect endemic endangered species, and we have been doing this since 2008. Other scientific projects involve biodiversity studies (insect diversity of the island) and population studies.
Community linkages are also made through our environmental education program. Firstly, our staff works directly with local schools to integrate environmental education into the normal curricula. Secondly, we use an environmental education centre to offer the community a place to conduct scientific presentations, consult books and access a computer with pedagogic games. Lastly, we have a visitor centre that is dedicated to inform visitors about Ctenosaura bakeri and the other unique species of animals and plants that occur on Utila. We also organise various activities for the benefit of the community like social workshops, cultural and environmental celebrations.
Your interest and involvement is greatly needed and appreciated!
