Program Duration: 2-4 weeks
Gain unparalleled access to a country that is rich with the traditions of West African culture. Ghana was the first African country to gain independence, and while the official language of Ghana is English, more than 70 different languages are spoken.
* Service
Ghanaians are well-known for being welcoming, enjoying conversation and exchanging ideas with others. Community service will focus primarily on working with children in schools, orphanages, and day care centers where you can teach basic English, crafts, and sports.
* Learning
Ghana is rich with culture and history. Everyday you will learn more about its cultural traditions and also the issues facing the country. Activities include workshops on African percussion and dance and well as meetings with political, historical and tribal leaders.
* Exploration
Historically, Ghana was the hub of the slave trade from Africa to the Americas and Europe. You will re-visit history when we go to see the slave forts on the coast. You'll also hike through a rainforest, visit Kumasi, home of the Ashanti people, and meet the chief of a local village.
* Campus
Live in the town of Tema, on country's southern shores, at one of Africa's most prestigious high schools. During free time, hang out with your new friends and enjoy the swimming pool, workout room or run on the track. You will live in single-sex dorms and will have 2 to 3 roommates.
* Volunteer with community service organizations such as orphanages, day care centers and schools
* Travel to Kumasi, the heart of the Ashanti tribe, known for its gold mines
* Visit a village that weaves the beautiful kente cloth
* Interact with a traditional village chief and participate in a durbar ceremony
* Hike through the tree-tops of a rainforest along a series of rope bridges that pass through the forest's canopy
