Mary Miller...Octogenarian.... Frequent volunteer

Wonderfully organized organization. "Even at my age" I can do the travelling and get the rewards. I loved working with the 'local kids' in the clinic. Many are dental students themselves. I have volunteered in all 6 countries and appreciate the differences in cultures. The kids receiving our services are very grateful for our return trips to see how they have improved their dental health. You too can do this Granny's and Grandpa's.

amazing time

I loved this trip. I thought it was well organized and the group leaders Mark and Sue really looked after us. It was great to see the impact the GDR has had over the years at this school. I enjoyed almost every minute of it.

Everest country

Kathmandu has weather surprisingly like that back home. The dust and mosquitoes annoy some new volunteers but for anyone who has ever been on a camping trip or gone overseas before, these accommodations are luxe - hot showers, great food, laundry service, gracious people, worthwhile work. After, the trip up the Everest trail is one to regale your friends with upon your return.

Outstanding experience, unique immersion in Kathmandu

Global Dental Relief (GDR) does good work in many countries, including Nepal. They have many years of experience there, which is very helpful when navigating the sights and streets of Kathmandu. The clinic is run in a Buddhist boarding school in the middle of the main Buddhist area of the city. Accommodations are nearby at a guest house and restaurant run by a Buddhist monastery. Both dental professionals and non-professionals can volunteer, which greatly expands both the audience and the impact of the program. GDR runs a great program with demonstrable positive impact on the children and young adults it serves. One of their singular goals is to see children repeatedly, usually every two years, which provides ongoing care. The impact of "perfect teeth" can't be underestimated in these children's nutrition, health, and sense of well-being. As a volunteer you are immersed in the culture and commerce of Kathmandu, especially its Buddhist area, in ways unavailable to a normal tourist. It is a very rewarding and comforting experience. GDR arranges for a day of sightseeing during the clinic and can also arrange a trek on the Everest trail after the clinic ends.

A Group That Cares

Global Dental cares about the patients they treat but they also care about the volunteers. My husband and I did the Nepal trip last spring. We were met at the airport, toured around Kathmandu and other historical areas. We were taken to dinner and generally treated as respected workers, professionals, volunteers, and team members. The administrative staff was EXCELLENT. Organized, respectful and more.
