Georgia State offers many summer and maymester programs led and taught by Georgia State professors. These programs tend to be focused on a particular topic or theme and range from 10 to 20 participants, though some are larger. Students participate in lectures, site visits, excursions, and tours as part of the program. These programs usually last between two and six weeks. Students find these programs a great way to really get to know their professors and other GSU students while earning GSU credits and grades. Students do not have to study on a program related to their major, but they certainly can. Financial aid and scholarships are available.
Medical Virology will be at the Dr. J.M. Vanella Institute of Virology, a division of the School of Medicine of the National University of Cordoba (UNC), and instructed by Dr. Pilar Adamo of the National University of Cordoba. Instruction will be in English. The course will focus on viruses of public health concern in Argentina and current research on these viruses at the Institute of Virology. The course will include a wet lab where students will learn techniques employed in this research. The course will also include a visit to the CDC in Atlanta and a tentatively planned visit to the Malbrann Institute, the Argentine CDC equivalent. The course will be cross listed at the undergraduate and graduate levels and an Honors section will be provided.
The UNC is the second oldest university in the Western Hemisphere, founded by Jesuits in 1613. Cordoba, a city of ~ 1 million, is the traditional center of learning in Argentina and students make up 10 percent of the city's population. Most students live in the area called "Nueva Cordoba," and students in the course will experience Argentinian student life in this urban setting. Students from UNC will also be enrolled in the Medical Virology course allowing GSU students to interact with Argentine students. In addition to a city tour, excursions will include the city's night life (including a tango show), the zoo and Le Perla, a notorious concentration camp from the "dirty war" of the 1970s.
The province of Cordoba in central Argentina features 400-year old Jesuit missions and is the childhood home of the famous revolutionary Che Guevara. Weekend excursions will explore this history, with a day trip to Alta Gracia to tour a Jesuit mission and the Che Guevara museum. On a second weekend trip, to the Jesuit estancias of Jesus Maria and Santa Catalina, students will experience an asado, a traditional Argentine barbecue.
The course will conclude with a tour of Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital and largest city. Students will be in Buenos Aires on May 25, Argentinian Independence Day. An optional postcourse tour to the majestic Iguazu waterfalls on the Argentina-Brazil border is available.
