  • Description

The Geneva Program is unique in that it looks at technology's growing and dynamic role in trade and development, covering issues such as creative industries, finance, telecommunications, and intellectual property. Students will participate in behind the scenes visits to international organizations like the World Trade Organization to meet negotiators and learn about the international trading system; participate in simulations with experts in trade, international law, and development; and have access to a network of practitioners, diplomats, and academics from around the world.

The program is graduate level and awards six Georgetown graduate credits. The program is hosted in Geneva, Switzerland by the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, one of the premier schools of international affairs in the world, and the oldest school of international affairs in Europe.

    Curriculum:

Students enroll in one course, CCTP 788 Trade, Technology and Development, which counts for six graduate credits and is a Georgetown University course.

The course is taught by Georgetown Professor J.P. Singh and by various faculty from the Graduate Institute in Geneva.

Week 1 of the course focuses on core features and current issues in the world trading system. Week 2 of the course focuses on development and trade in manufacturing, agriculture and services. The classroom format includes lectures, discussion, simulations, and on-site visits to various international organizations and developing country missions.

Please note that the program is intensive, with classes meeting Monday-Friday roughly 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. with occasional evening or weekend events. Readings for the program will be made available at least a few weeks in advance of the program, and students are encouraged to do as much of the readings in advance as possible. Most of the readings will be made available for free online.

Upon successful completion of the program, Georgetown students receive six Georgetown graduate credits on a Georgetown transcript. Non-Georgetown students should discuss transfer credit with a dean or academic advisor at their home university. Students also receive a Graduate Institute certificate upon completion of the program.

  • Georgetown University Office of International Programs's Mission Statement

To promote, support, and develop international and intercultural educational opportunities for students, and in so doing, help to define the international character of Georgetown. These programs are developed and evaluated in collaboration with the wider Georgetown community to ensure that they are academically rigorous, linguistically appropriate, and complementary to the Georgetown curriculum. In keeping with the Jesuit philosophy of education and service, these overseas opportunities invite participants to reflect on the values that form their own identities, and encourage them to assume their roles as responsible world citizens. The Office of International Programs offers more than 120 programs in 39 countries.
