This is a six-credit study abroad program at the Villa Le Balze. The program provides students with the opportunity to explore and reflect on contemporary Italian culture while improving their writing skills. Enrollment is limited to twenty-one students who live and study together in a small, closely-knit community and participate together in several trips and activities.
Students will study the ways in which Italy has been a source of inspiration and community for creators of music, theater, the visual arts and literature during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Students live at the Villa and are placed in double, triple or quadruple rooms, some with private bathrooms. All meals are provided, with the exception of Saturday lunch, dinner and Sunday lunch.
Students take two 3-credit classes, MUSC-329 (Italy as a Creative Force in Music, Art and Literature) and MUSC-162 (Creative Writing and the Performing Arts) and earn a total of six credits for their coursework.
The program, which is organized as two three-credit courses taught in English, combines music, theater, literature, writing, travel, and cultural studies. Students also attend lectures on the art and architecture of Florence and on contemporary Italian society. Classes meet for four hours each day, Monday through Thursday, either in a classroom, the Villa library, the Villa gardens, or Florence itself.
Students will gain an historical context in which to view the arts and will participate in field trips to relevant sites, as well as attend live performances in Florence and the surrounding areas. Students are expected to participate in these excursions as they are considered a part of the academic program.
