During summer 2012 Georgetown will offer a three-week, three-credit program at Villa Le Balze focusing on Jesuit history and spirituality. The program will provide students with the opportunity to explore and reflect on the history of the Society of Jesus while gaining an understanding - both theoretical and practical - of Ignatian spirituality.
Students will enroll in THEO 129: The Jesuits - History and Spirituality, an academic course that focuses on the fundamental dimensions of the spiritual tradition begun by St. Ignatius. This focus will be through the careful consideration of the spiritual classic, "The Spiritual Exercises", written by the founder of the Society of Jesus.
Enrollment is limited to fifteen students who live and study together in a small, closely-knit community and participate together in several trips and activities, continuing the shared learning experience that students are able to enjoy at the Villa during the academic year.
A highlight of this summer program is the field trip program, which includes site visits in Florence as well as an overnight trip to Rome. As a class, the students visit some of Italy's better known Jesuit sites as well as some of the major monuments and museums of the region.

To promote, support, and develop international and intercultural educational opportunities for students, and in so doing, help to define the international character of Georgetown. These programs are developed and evaluated in collaboration with the wider Georgetown community to ensure that they are academically rigorous, linguistically appropriate, and complementary to the Georgetown curriculum. In keeping with the Jesuit philosophy of education and service, these overseas opportunities invite participants to reflect on the values that form their own identities, and encourage them to assume their roles as responsible world citizens. The Office of International Programs offers more than 120 programs in 39 countries.
