  • Description

Teaching in India as a community school teacher in Bangalore, gives gap year volunteers an opportunity to help children from the poorest backgrounds to learn and develop to their fullest potential.

GapGuru works with a school more than 100 years old to provide education for the most marginalised sections of society. While teaching children is the primary aim of this gap year volunteer project, the school also addresses the healthcare needs of the students and their families.

Until Class 8, pupils on this gap year programme are taught in Tamil, but this switches to English thereafter, and volunteers wanting to teach English in India can help ease this change. As well as help with spoken English, volunteers wanting to teach children abroad are needed as activity leaders and to develop special projects.

  • Highlights

As a volunteer traveling to teach English in India you have an opportunity to make a real difference in Bangalore. There are a number of social and economic factors that keep local children from school, and the very presence of gap year volunteers teaching English abroad, motivates students to attend.

The management of the school recognizes the benefits of gap year students traveling to teach in India, and can suggest a range of activities for your classes. Children are taught in Tamil up to Class 7, and as a volunteer teaching in India, your work in the primary school will focus on learning activities such as painting, songs and games.

As native English speakers, gap year volunteers can interact particularly productively with the older children at the school, who are aged 11-15 years old. The director of the secondary school is keen for those who volunteer teaching English to instigate cultural exchange with the students by developing and undertaking special projects. These gap year teaching projects would have set objectives for learning, and the subject of the project would depend on the volunteer's skills and interest.

Previous volunteers teaching in India have run quizzes, researched a current affairs topic with the children, taught pupils about their home town and country, and organized class photographs (not as easy as it sounds!). The trust that funds education on this gap year project also supports a community hospital opposite the school. The hospital provides health care for the children and if you volunteer to teach in India, you can get involved with this programme as well.

This is a wonderful gap year opportunity to for those wanting to volunteer in India, and help children from the poorest backgrounds to develop their future potential. The school is very supportive of volunteers teaching English abroad, and welcomes help at any level.

As a volunteer teaching English in Bangalore you will develop your own projects and activities, and work on your own initiative with guidance from local teachers. This gap year abroad can give you valuable experience and help you in your future career. For gap year volunteers wanting to teach in India, Bangalore can act as a base to explore Southern India, which has a wealth of holy sites, wildlife parks and palaces.
