Spend your gap year working as an orphanage volunteer in Tanzania and help children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. GapGuru works with orphanages based in the bustling town of Arusha, helping them to provide shelter, food and education to children aged 2-12 years old.
Children taken into these orphanages are often sick, malnourished and neglected and gap year volunteers can help to create a happy and supportive environment, where they can get the help they need to live independent and fulfilling lives. Working in an Africa orphanage can be an incredibly diverse gap year experience. Most importantly orphanage volunteers will spend time playing games with the children and helping them learn. Volunteers can also help local carers at with their daily activities.
Teaching English is an important part of this childcare project and gap year volunteers can give children help and encouragement with their homework. Those interested in healthcare can spend your time helping centre nurses to keep the children healthy and happy. There are also opportunities to help the orphanages with fundraising, and those with green fingers can help in the garden, where they can grow vegetables and look after the cows, goats and chickens.
With so many potential volunteering roles this is a unique opportunity to get involved in gap year orphanage work, where you can make a real difference to the lives of underprivileged children. As an orphanage volunteer you can provide invaluable support to overstretched staff and teach orphans who have been deprived of so much.
At the same time, those volunteering in Tanzania and teaching children in orphanages will build new skills and confidence. Volunteers often form close bonds with the children, staff and communities they work with, making their experience unforgettable.
No qualifications necessary, but volunteers should have an interest in working with children.
