  • Description

Volunteers work in a secondary school in Quito that teaches underprivileged children, aged between 12 and 18. The school provides free education to children who pass an entrance exam to attend. The energy and enthusiasm of volunteers can make a real difference in helping to educate and inspire the students, many of who have come from poor farming backgrounds. The school's teachers often struggle to teach English and computing, so any help is warmly received.

Gap year volunteers provide support in English classes by working as a teaching assistant. You can introduce games and activities to help make the lessons more fun, or share stories about your own country and way of life, which helps the children to broaden their horizons. The school has a computer room, but the teachers are not very confident with new technology. Gap year volunteers can help teach pupils basic computer skills, such as word processing and creating spreadsheets.

Volunteers need to speak some Spanish but lessons can be arranged locally. Those wanting to prepare more thoroughly for teaching English abroad can take part in one of our TEFL weekends and gain greater skills and confidence.

  • Highlights

Teaching on this project is a great way to make your gap year worthwhile and contribute to the development of disadvantaged children and young adults living in Quito. Your efforts can help them to gain better jobs in the future so you really can have a lasting impact.

Volunteering in Quito is also a great way to learn Spanish, as you will live and work within local communities and be exposed to the language at all times. Those interested in teaching will also gain fantastic classroom experience and leave the project with new confidence.
