Teaching English in Chile

Chile

Program Duration

Typical Duration of Program
5-8 weeks

  • Description

This gap year teaching project is based in Chile's beautiful Elqui valley, where volunteers work in under-funded primary schools. Learning English as a foreign language is compulsory for children from 5th grade (10 years old), but in many cases it is now taught from as early as 1st grade (6 years old) and even kindergarten, so the support of native English speakers can make a real difference.

Volunteers are tasked with improving levels of English among both staff and students, but you will be encouraged to get involved with other lessons and use your creativity, interests and experience to develop your own interactive learning activities and projects. In the past volunteers have shared photography, music, drama, outdoor activities and painting with the children. Volunteers can also help widen the number of sports available to students and support the teaching of computing and information technology. This can take place both within the schools and in the wider community, where volunteers can help local people gain the skills they need to make a living out of tourism.

  • Highlights

Based in the beautiful Elqui Valley, this volunteer teaching project is the perfect opportunity to explore the stunning scenery of Chile. By teaching at schools and living alongside local communities you will gain a special understanding of Chilean society, local conditions and challenges, while improving your own Spanish skills. The teaching experience itself will bring immense satisfaction and many volunteers find it difficult to say goodbye!
