Gap year volunteer work in an organization that is committed to making a difference to the lives of people affected by autism in India. Based in New Delhi, this pioneering charity is making a huge difference to the way autism is understood and dealt with in India. The centre runs several programmes, including clinical services, parent and teacher training, workshops and lectures. It also conducts research in the field of autism and publishes its own journal.
Since 1991, this organization has acted as the main centre for autism in India, and has worked with autistic children and their families to help them to live as fully participating members of the community. Families come from all over the country for diagnosis and training so that they can go home with the knowledge and methods to cope. A special school for autistic children now forms an integral part of the activities this organization undertakes.
Gap year volunteers can help the organisation to continue its life-changing work. You will primarily be involved in teaching and mentoring children aged five and upwards in a variety of subjects, such as English, music, drama, arts and crafts. You will also receive on the job training to teach autistic and communication impaired children. As you gain experience you can run workshops to help teach the parents more about autism and how to cope with it.
This gap year project is challenging but also incredibly rewarding! Like all not for profit organisations this project relies heavily on volunteers, so your contribution can make a real difference. Through mentoring the children you will see a change in their behaviour and interaction, and witnessing this progress can be very satisfying.
Communication is key to helping autistic children and through your training and on the job experience you will develop new confidence and interpersonal skills.
Volunteers need no previous experience but should have an interest in childcare and teaching.
