Incredible Volunteer Program in Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta
Colombia: Santa Marta
Fundacion Por La Madre is is a non-profit organization created in 2008 to work on environmental issues, education and sustainable local development in vulnerable communities.
The purpose of this volunteer program- in partnership with educational institutions of the government - is to support urban and rural schools with learning programs in topics such as English, culture, environment, artistic expression, etc. We work with children between 7 and 16 years.
We have recently initiated a support project to the "Institucion Educativa Distrital de Minca (IED MINCA) - Magdalena" (coffee township, 14 km from Santa Marta).
Volunteers mostly work in the district and official school of Minca. Volunteers interact directly in the classroom so the student contact is direct, although most of the time they are accompanied by teachers of the school and foundation staff. Volunteers can also develop a class under their own parameters following some basic guidelines of work developed by the Foundation.
Live time in Sierra Nevada is a great opportunity to enjoy a very special area in many ways. Called by the Koguian culture "the heart of the earth", Sierra Nevada offers to the volunteer a wonderful place to stay during their volunteer work.
