Great time spent in smaller communities in Oaxaca

The thing I really loved about volunteering for En Vía was being able to go out to some of the smaller communities that normally I wouldn't have visited. It gave me a good insight to life outside of the city which can often feel disconnected from the rest of Oaxaca. The organizers were great and provided me with lots of material and help so I never felt lost or unsupported. If you are in Oaxaca for a month or more and can spare a couple afternoons a week I would definitely recommend spending it with En Vía.

A truely enriching experience

I spent 8 weeks teaching English with En Via in a small community outside of the city. I'd never taught English before and spoke barely any Spanish but I loved the sound of a challenge. The program is very flexible and the English Coordinators offer lots of advice and planning sessions, as well as a fully stocked store cupboard. Going out to the communities was the highlight of my week, and it was a great chance for me to learn more Spanish. Volunteering at En Via was also a great way to make friends and meet new people.

Enriching and memorable experience

Volunteering with En Via was one of the best decisions I made. I Immediately felt connected to other foreigners and travelers through a community that wants to improve the lives of local Oaxacans. Heading out of the city bustle to connect with an indigenous community and work with the children to expand their language skills was a highlight of my week. The community I worked in was peaceful and beautiful and laid back. The children were delightful and charming even in their occasional rebellious or timid moments. I enjoyed the challenge, but always felt supported by the coordinators. I came to feel as though I, also was a part of the community I taught in. Very enriching and memorable.

10/10 would recommend

I was a volunteer English teacher with En Via in 2014-5. Had a wonderful experience with the program and the students were so sweet. Would highly recommend, even if your Spanish isn't excellent (mine wasn't).

Great volunteer experience; good balance of flexibility and structure

En Via's English program is well-run by a team of dedicated, warm, and supportive volunteers and staff. The curriculum is specific and carefully structured, and training is offered to new English teachers; but the staff is always open to new ideas and feedback. The class schedule also leaves volunteers plenty of time to explore the beautiful city of Oaxaca and its surrounding villages. I highly recommend En Via to anyone with a sincere interest in teaching and a desire to learn more about the culture and people of Oaxaca!
