Earth Systems Study of Science Programme (Earth Systems) is an interdisciplinary programme integrating geology, marine and coastal ecology, environmental science, policy, management and economics as a basis for tackling environmental issues arising at the interface between nature and society. The Earth Systems programme begins with a five-week field camp where, focusing on field and research based education, students study how the geosphere, bioshpere, hydrosphere, and anthrosphere systems interact to form the New Zealand Earth System.
Central to the Earth Systems Programme is Kaitiakitanga - Maori perspectives on environmental guardianship. Led by Earth Systems Director, Dan Hikuroa, (a Maori scientist) students learn how indigenous practices can be utilized in modern society. Following field camp students spend a semester at the University of Auckland enrolling in four papers (classes). One of the papers is a semeseter long research course that focuses upon research conducted during the last week of field camp.
Students receive a transcript from Lafayette College that includes a field camp course credit and four course credits from the University of Auckland.
The Earth Systems Programme begins field camp on the beaches and coral reefs of Rarotonga (Cook Islands) studying marine and coastal Ecology with acclaimed whale research and conservationist Nan Hauser. The programme then transitions to mainland New Zealand to study geothermal energy, volcanic hazards, kaitiakitanga, and learn environmental field techniques (water sampling, Ground Penetrating Radar, VibraCore). During field camp, students collect data for their semester long research project that focused on environmental hazards in the Bay of Plenty, NZ!
