  • Description

The project has been running on the perfect island of Koh Tao since 2008. It was originally set up by members of the local community to help preserve their precious local culture, valuable land resources and coral reefs. The project has three different components, land conservation, marine conservation, and education, each playing their own part in helping to preserve the island.

The aim of the land conservation component is to deal with local, social and environmental challenges on the island such as erosion and deforestation, beaches pollution and waste disposal. These are growing concerns for the island's communities and are often associated with the unregulated growth of tourism. To combat these problems the land conservation project is developing new initiatives such as recycling and tree planting to help preserve the health, beauty and integrity of the island for future generations.

    * What will I be doing?

Whilst on your placement you will work with a dedicated team of international and local volunteers carrying out daily projects for the benefit of the island and local community. You will be trained in methods and techniques of sustainable living, whilst also taking part in research projects and awareness raising campaigns. Some of the projects you might take part in are, water testing, mangrove restoration work, grass and tree planting, coral reef surveys and beach clean-ups.
