Discover Sri Lanka, a glittering jewel of an island nestled in the aquamarine waters of the Indian Ocean. Fringing the coasts are an array of gently arcing golden-sand beaches, and vibrant colourful communities making Sri Lanka a country of exquisite cultures, landscapes and cuisines with a fascinating history that reflects this.
What Will I Be Doing?
* Introduction Week
Your first week is designed to give you an opportunity to explore the history and culture of Sri Lanka, and of course Kandy, with visits to local sites of special interest such as nearby markets, sample the local cuisine, familiarise yourself with Sri Lankan customs and meet the local people, as well as hopefully learning some key phrases to help you get by. Following this wonderful opportunity to fully immerse yourself in your new surroundings, your briefings for the volunteer work will begin along with language classes and cooking lessons throughout the week.
* Work Schedule
This is a fantastic opportunity for those studying or working in the medical sector to gain some hands on experience in the field and learn about the running of hospitals in Sri Lanka. Your work programme will depend on your qualifications and experience but there is something for all healthcare devotees on this hands-on medical project.
You could find yourself working, assisting or observing in various departments within the hospital, including the laboratory, pharmacy, maternity unit, support groups, paediatrics, inpatients, outpatients clinic and theatre. This will also give you an insight into local Sri Lankan medical practices such as Ayurveda, where you will have the opportunity to exchange knowledge and skills. More experienced medical practitioners and students could assist with blood tests, vaccines and more specialist procedures. Pre-med volunteers can gain fantastic and valuable medical work experience looking after patients, helping in the pharmacy or lab and observing various procedures.
Volunteers are asked to remain flexible and use their initiative in order to get the most out of this placement. You may be assisting the doctors in taking vital measurements such as blood pressure and temperature as well as dispensing medication and assisting with nursing duties. Your work schedule and duties will fall in-line with the shift personnel and roster at that time and could even include some night shifts.
* Gain a lifetime of incredible memories.
* Visit this tropical paradise.
* Gain valuable medical work experience.
