Discover Sri Lanka, a glittering jewel of an island nestled in the aquamarine waters of the Indian Ocean. Fringing the coasts are an array of gently arcing golden-sand beaches and vibrant colourful communities, making Sri Lanka is a country of exquisite cultures, landscapes and cuisines with a fascinating history that reflects this.
Intertwined with legend and fable, elephants were an emblem of the wealth and sanctity of the Sri Lankan kings. Many of the stunning ancient monuments of the Kandyan Kings were built with the aid of elephants, and these still stand as testament to the magnificence of these incredible mammals.
What Will I Be Doing?
* Introduction week
Your first week is designed to give you an opportunity to explore the history and culture of Sri Lanka, and of course Kandy, with visits to local sites of special interest such as nearby markets, the chance to sample the local cuisine, and familiarise yourself with Sri Lankan customs and meet the local people, as well as hopefully learning some key phrases to help you get by. Once fully immersed in your new surroundings, your briefings for the volunteer work will begin along with language classes and cooking lessons throughout the week.
* Work Schedule
Throughout your placement you will work 5 days a week from around 8am to 5pm. You will be involved in all aspects of the running of the centre including such duties as cleaning out enclosures, bathing the elephants, taking part in behavioural enrichment initiatives as well as ongoing repair and maintenance work.
* Experience the mystery of the island of Sri Lanka.
* Explore the culture and cuisine that characterise Sri Lanka!
* Work closely with magnificent elephants.
