  • Description

South Africans are extremely passionate about Rugby and are renowned for being a very tough and technical force on the international stage. However, whilst rugby is a passion for many, very few get to play and develop in a well-structured environment. The irony is that many of the most promising players, often living in and around Port Elizabeth's townships, are left undiscovered and their talents undeveloped. It can be hard for these children to get a game going with friends, but even so, many are seen kicking and throwing a ball around with each other, dreaming of being the next Francois Pienaar and leading the Springboks to World Cup victory again. But without the proper chance to play and further their game, this will only ever remain a township dream.

    What Will I Be Doing?

Under the leadership of local staff you will usually work five days a week coaching children of various ages, normally between nine and sixteen, on both in-school and after-school placements at various schools in the townships around Port Elizabeth.

You will normally work with children who are from disadvantaged backgrounds and hopefully become much more than just a coach to them. As their mentor and friend, you will lead them on a rugby training program from simple ball handling skills to movement, position holding and team play.

The majority of your placement will involve running training sessions and matches for the children as well as providing them with decent rugby balls and other training equipment. You will also have solid support from the other volunteers, our in-country staff and local coaches who will give you all the training methods and ideas that you might need. From complicated technical play and beach runs to rucking and mauling formations, you will soon develop your own coaching programme, unique to you and your players. Over the course of your project, you will see the children develop and improve under your guidance, making this an exceptionally rewarding project!
