Help disadvantaged and marginalised children by bringing them hope through teaching, and then experience a supercharged fortnight of adventure activities in Senegal, a multifaceted and vibrant country famous for its art heritage and a rich tapestry of interwoven musical roots. Despite its diminutive size, Senegal has its own unique amalgamation of exotic music, tempting cuisine and unusual customs, making it a veritable melting pot of cultural discovery. Visit pristine ivory coastline laced with the dramatic expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, where you will find beaches scattered with rose-tinged shells, palm trees flourishing on the sandy shores and coral reefs and cays replete with a myriad of species of tiny fish and other tropical creatures unique to these waters.
What Will I Be Doing?
Your first five days will consist of acclimatisation to your new environment. During this time, you will have a chance to visit some local areas of interest such as Goree Island and the Old Slave House Museum as well as exploring the city. You will also be given an introductory lesson to Wolof, the main African language spoken in Senegal. This period is a great time to get to know your way around the city and to get acquainted with the public transport system, as well as practical tasks such as registering with the Embassy and exchanging currency into Communaute Financiere Africaine (CFA) francs.
After your five day orientation period, you will start work on the project. During the week, you will work with local community projects and primary schools and at the weekends you will be able to organise excursions for groups of five or more. You will teach English and play games with the children both in the classroom and on the beach. Additionally, you will help staff with their daily work and give support with using the school computers.
