Despite its diminutive size, Senegal has its own unique amalgamation of exotic music, tempting cuisine and unusual customs, making it a veritable melting pot of cultural discovery. Visit pristine ivory coastline laced with the dramatic expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, where you will find beaches scattered with rose-tinged shells, palm trees fringing the sandy shores and coral reefs and cays replete with a myriad of species of tiny fish and other tropical creatures unique to these waters.
* What Will I Be Doing?
Your first five days will consist of acclimatisation to your new environment. During this time, you will have a chance to explore the local areas of interest such as Goree Island and the Old Slave House Museum as well as exploring the city. You will also be given an introductory lesson in Wolof, the main African language spoken in Senegal. This period is a great time to get to know your way around the city and to get acquainted with the public transport system, as well as practical tasks such as registering with the Embassy and exchanging currency into Communaute Financiere Africaine (CFA) francs.
This project is a microcredit programme run by women, predominantly for women. You will be working in a microcredit bank, assisting with accounting, administration and day-to-day activities. You will ensure the smooth running of the bank's activities so if you have any financial, accounting or management expertise this will be highly beneficial, though not essential.
Volunteers can also help out in the organic garden or childcare centre which is also run alongside the programme. This enables women to work for the scheme whilst raising young children and produce grown in the garden can be sold to generate much-needed extra income.
