  • Description

Help fight the devastating consequences of the HIV epidemic in Senegal, a multifaceted and vibrant country famous for its art heritage and a rich tapestry of interwoven musical roots. Despite its diminutive size, Senegal has its own unique amalgamation of exotic music, tempting cuisine and unusual customs, making it a veritable melting pot of cultural discovery. Visit pristine ivory coastline laced with the dramatic expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, where you will find beaches scattered with rose-tinged shells, palm trees flourishing on the sandy shores and coral reefs and cays replete with a myriad of species of tiny fish and other tropical creatures unique to these waters.

Join this project and help bring basic care, love and attention to these vulnerable children, whilst also promoting an education programme that will prove vital in the struggle in lowering infection levels. At the same time discover this delightful part of Africa where you can guarantee to find a wonderfully warm welcome, a wealth of exotic wildlife and the most incredible gap year experience that it is possible to have!

    * What Will I Be Doing?

The work on the project benefits from a varied schedule covering several aspects of the HIV and health programme. You will be working alongside those suffering from the disease, providing a support system that is a vital lifeline for those affected and their families, including giving dietary information, advice on cultivating food in kitchen gardens, supporting sufferers in their homes and helping in AIDS units in hospitals. A key focus will be caring for children who have been orphaned by HIV and who are lacking any support network making their daily life an interminable struggle against desperate poverty and lack of support. As well as this, you will help run AIDS awareness workshops that are of utmost importance in the fight to stem the spread of AIDS through the country, providing an educational service that will help break the pattern of infection. Other elements of the project include helping HIV sufferers set up income generating initiatives that will allow them to become more self sufficient. Each and every aspect of the programme is vital and relevant to the fight against this vastly destructive disease.
