Nepal: Kathmandu
This excellent programme gives you the opportunity to combine spending time in the spectacular city of Kathmandu, where swallows swoop amongst the elegant spires of the ancient temples, with delving into vast nature reserves, and enjoying adventure activities in the dramatic mountain foothills. You will also have the chance to absorb local customs, observe traditional dances and festivals, and even learn to write and speak some basic Nepali.
* What Will I Be Doing?
Your time on this exciting project is divided up into two key phases. Initially you will be staying in the ancient city of Kathmandu, where you will be combining exploring this complex and historic city with learning to write and speak basic Nepali. You can take this opportunity to visit the intricate and atmospheric holy shrines such as Pashupatinath, or Freak Street and Thamel, popular destinations for Western tourists. The Newar culture and architecture of the city attracts a lot of interest from visitors from all over the world. Other sights to look out for are the breathtaking Narayanhiti Palace, and the mystical Buddha monument that occupies a prominent place in the city's spiritual heart. Explore Nepal's local food and customs by visiting the traditional style restaurants tucked away in the winding back streets of the city.
The second phase of the programme involves travelling out of the urban environment of Kathmandu and relocating to one of the small rural villages in the foothills of the Himalayas. Here you will immerse yourself in the lives of those who still live a traditional lifestyle, existing close to nature and embracing a natural spirituality. You will take this chance to hike in the pure air of the mountain foothills, against the striking back drop of the Himalayan ranges, and you are sure to appreciate drinking in the peaceful and serene influence of this incredible natural environment. Enjoy the thrilling adrenaline rush of white water rafting down the majestic Trishuli River, and visit the extensive Chitwan nature reserve for jungle treks and elephant rides.
At the end of this phase you will make your way back to Kathmandu, where you will have a farewell dinner and witness a display of the traditional local dancing, before flying back to family and friends.
