Discover Morocco - a country of vividly coloured towns baking under the hot North African sun, striking mountain ranges where eagles soar in the azure skies and tribal communities live by ancient and arcane rituals and traditions. With its African culture juxtaposed with strong Mediterranean and Moorish influences, expressed in the dramatic architecture, this country has been a magnet drawing visitors for centuries. Trek for two weeks in the magnificent heights of the Atlas Mountains that dominate the northern region of this unusual North African country, followed by a challenging and worthwhile teaching and development assignment within a deprived rural and Berber village. Whilst on the trek you will enjoy travelling along the spine of the cragged mountains, passing along ancient herding trails led by your expert Berber guides, and absorbing the magnificent natural landscapes and vistas that surround you. Once you have completed the trekking phase of this project, you can get fully involved with living amongst the hospitable people of a small Moroccan mountain village, gaining an intimate and fascinating insight into the lives of a settlement that has existed for millennia. Embrace this teaching and trekking project for a comprehensive and exhilarating gap year adventure or year out experience in this beautiful and unique African country.
* What Will I Be Doing?
Your two week adventure trek will be led by project staff and expert local Berber tribesmen, who have an intimate knowledge of the route, ensuring that your experience will be totally authentic, exciting and safe. You will be travelling by foot with a caravan of camels and mules carrying the expedition luggage. You will average a significant distance every day, during a six hour period, which will really give you the opportunity to push yourself physically as you absorb the magnificent landscapes that surround you and breathe the clean mountain air. You will have the chance to view some of the most exhilarating peaks in North Africa, where you will find views that will take your breath away, including Mount Toubkal, famous throughout the world. Once you have completed your journey across the mountains, you will enter the community phase of the project which entails an assignment within a Berber village. You will gain a privileged access and insights into the world of these marginalised and oppressed communities whose simple way of life is being eroded by global influences. Concurrently with the teaching programme will run community development projects which will include activities as diverse as sports coaching and classroom building.
