  • Description

Guatemala - a country with a fascinating and intriguing Mayan legacy overlaid with a classic Spanish and Portuguese heritage. This is a country of dark, enigmatic forests, ancient crumbling ruins sinking into the soil of its tropical rainforests, and colourful, exotic birds swooping through its leafy canopies. Work at an incredible animal rescue and rehabilitation centre at the cutting edge of its field, and contribute to the protection and conservation of the natural populations of some of Guatemala's most precious and rare animal inhabitants. These include the elegant and elusive jaguars that are synonymous with the dense, tangled jungles of Central America, and the charming, vividly coloured scarlet macaws, often at risk due to demand from the illegal pet trade. The work carried out at the centre is absolutely vital in halting the damage inflicted by humans on the magnificent wildlife found in this stunning natural environment, through activities such as habitat destruction and poaching.

    * What Will I Be Doing?

You really will get a true hands on insight into the work of the rescue centre, and the range of activities that you will be carrying out are very varied and extremely interesting for anyone with a passion for wildlife conservation. You will be out and about in the beautiful forest environment, helping with feeding the animals, cleaning the enclosures, maintaining the trails, and making and recording behavioural observations of animals ranging from coatimundis, anteaters, spider monkeys and the charming margays, found only in Central and South America. The animal enclosures are spread throughout the forest in order to minimise stress to the creatures, and consequently you will have the opportunity to see much of the incredible forests here, as you move between areas. You may also be helping care for the animals in quarantine, where each rescued animal is housed on arrival to ensure that it harbours no pathogens.
