Gambia is a tiny fertile sliver of vast and varied Africa, but is no less appealing for its dainty size. It is characterised by the might of the eponymous Gambia river; this vast tract of water pierces the country through its heart and saturates the surrounding land with fresh water, ensuring flourishing ecosystems, forests brimming with every variety of flora and fauna, and an intriguing culture that has evolved from roots embedded in the artisanal fishing traditions. Visit this perfect pocket of an ancient continent to discover mysterious standing stones, tribal dancing, a dazzling array of wildlife and an African adventure that will be truly unforgettable!
* What Will I Be Doing?
This project is dependent on the skills that you can bring. Whilst there are certain activities which are already in place such as beekeeping, maintaining the library, knitting and sewing and carpentry, whatever skills you can bring will be popular amongst the local participants. Previous volunteers have done such things as bringing their guitar to give music lessons or brought painting supplies and given art lessons. This is the ideal opportunity to bring along your skills and interests to share with the local community.
As an example of an existing course, the beekeeping lessons have proved to be highly popular and six students are already seriously considering becoming independent beekeepers. The project's purpose built bee farm has not only provided many villagers with extra skills but extra income through sales of honey and bee's wax candles in local shops, stalls and supermarkets.

Independently
To conserve the world's most endangered wildlife and threatened habitats and to build sustainable livelihoods for marginalized and under resourced communities in the world's poorest countries. To create solutions that are apolitical, forward-thinking, community-driven, and innovative and which take into consideration the long-term needs of low income communities.
