Here in a land where the Queen of Sheba once ruled, primitive and modern live side by side, but the exquisite facial bone structure of the women here evokes the ancient heritage of the mighty queens of the past. However, years of famine, war and misrule have left a legacy of poverty and its attendant problems consequently, it is somewhere that truly needs and deserves the help of international volunteers.
Visit this land of starkly beautiful savannah plains punctuated by age old rock hewn churches, highlighting the unique juxtaposition of natural magnificence and cultural heritage found here, whilst making a crucial difference to some of the most vulnerable communities in the world. If you wish to transform the lives of disadvantaged Ethiopians whilst discovering this land of a tangible ancient aura, travel to Ethiopia for a gap year destination with a difference!
* What Will I Be Doing?
Your work schedule will cover a comprehensive, varied and enjoyable teaching and orphanage programme which will engage you fully with the children and will awaken your creativity and initiative.
You will work at the local orphanage where these disadvantaged children are so in need of your care and attention. You will play with the children and keep them engaged through games, crafts, sports, English lessons, music lessons and even health and HIV awareness seminars, all in order to ensure they receive support and learning otherwise unavailable to them. Additionally you will help with the running of the orphanage including preparing and serving food and cleaning, possibly helping the on-site nurses and a variety of other duties. You will be required to be entirely flexible as there is so much that you can do! You should be prepared to use you own initiative while you are working on your project, however if you need assistance in initiating any activities, the local staff will be more than happy to advise and assist you.
You will be welcomed at every turn by smiling and enthusiastic people - we cannot emphasise this enough! Whatever you decide, you are sure to gain huge satisfaction from helping and inspiring these underprivileged children whilst significantly enhancing your own skills and experience.
