Location
Brazil: Rio de Janeiro
Program Duration
2-4 weeks
Embrace the passion and colour of Brazil, when you visit this country of heartbreaking beauty and exotic wildlife. Relax on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro where locals and tourists alike bathe and surf in the warm waters and embrace the scintillating night life. Brazil is without a doubt one of the most bewitching destinations for those on a gap year or year out; it provides vibrant culture with great opportunities to assist worthwhile community development and conservation programmes. Brazil's favelas are home to thousands of underprivileged children, who suffer from poverty, neglect and poor health. Bring hope to the lives of the children of the favelas, and you will find the work deeply rewarding as you build up a relationship with the deprived children.
* What Will I Be Doing?
Whilst participating on this project you will be helping to take of babies and young children from very poor families. Their parents need a safe local place to leave their children so they are able to go to work and generate the necessary income to support their families. Lacking the financial capacity to place their children in paid criches, the families rely on the stability and commitment of dedicated volunteers to enable them to progress. Working with children from the ages of 4 months up to 7 years old, your activities will be wide ranging and variable, and no two days will be the same. You will be encouraged to introduce and organise new educational and recreational activities, such as painting, sports, drama and health awareness, and in fact anything in which you have experience and which is deemed to be constructive by the centre. There is a medical element to the placement in which visits by doctors and dentists provide free appointments to the poorest members of the favela community and you may also have the opportunity to take part in this work as well.
* What Happens When I Arrive?
You will be collected from the airport at Rio de Janeiro, a city full of passion and fabulous culture, you will then be escorted to your project accommodation where you will have all the amenities you need.
* Where Will I Be Staying?
Whilst volunteering on this project you will be accommodated in a local guesthouse where you will share a dorm room and have hot showers, wireless internet access, cable TV, communal areas and a fully equipped kitchen for preparing meals.
* Make lifelong friendships.
* Bring light & laughter to Brazilian children.
* Explore this South American jewel!
