Our Year Our Voice: FSD and the International Year of Youth

Today, youth represent 18% of the global population or 1.2 billion people. 87% of youth live in developing countries, facing challenges brought about by limited access to healthcare, education, employment, and economic opportunities. Struggling families often need their children to produce immediate income and the subsequent denial of education creates a vicious poverty trap. Recognizing the importance of providing young people with academic and vocational tools that allow them to be contributing members of their societies, FSD partners with community-based organizations (CBOs) in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to provide an array of services to youth and their families.

Vocational Skills Building for Youth in Masaka, Uganda / August 2010

Quick Fact: Listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the fourth highest global health risk, Indoor Air Pollution (IAP) kills 1.5 million people every year (more than malaria) and is responsible for over half of annual pneumonia deaths.

The kitchen at Kyabakuza Primary School (KPS) sits in a small room that lacks ventilation. With five stoves burning each day, the smoke quickly fills the kitchen air and creeps into neighboring classrooms. The indoor air pollution at KPS puts the cook and her children, as well as the teachers and students at grave risk for acute respiratory, cardiovascular and ocular diseases. Furthermore, the kitchen occupies a room that KPS could utilize for much needed classroom space.

In response, FSD funded an after-school program that teaches students at KPS practical, hands-on skills. The program's first project is building a new school kitchen with proper ventilation and using locally sourced materials. Using cassava flour, a cheaper and equally durable alternative to cement, the students will learn cassava construction techniques. KPS is already planning the next project - a school garden that will grow vegetables to provide more nutrient rich meals for students and teachers.

This project exemplifies the types of projects FSD supports - it is locally driven, economically and regionally viable, and environmentally sustainable. Moreover, Kyabakuza Primary School serves as an example for surrounding schools, as they can learn from and easily replicate this project.

As an FSD Intern you will...

*Work side-by-side with a Community-Based Organization specializing in one more of the following development sectors: health, youth and education, women's empowerment, microfinance, human rights, community development and/or environmental issues.
*Receive intensive training in skills essential to sustainable development, such as: community asset mapping, needs assessments, collaborative project design, grant writing, and project monitoring and evaluation.
*Gain grant writing and project management experience through designing and implementing a community-driven development project in partnership with your host organization.
*Access the FSD Alumni Network upon your return home to connect with like-minded individuals who help one another to reach their academic and professional goals through networking and regional events. FSD Alumni have won internationally renowned scholarships, studied at prestigious graduate schools, worked for prominent international development organizations, and have even started their own grassroots organizations.
