FIE's Semester in Madrid offers advanced Spanish students full immersion in the Spanish culture and enrollment at a Spanish university. Madrid is a thriving contemporary capital of culture, business and education, and a focal point for all that is truly Spanish.
Cultural Experiences
Through academic field trips and other co-curricular activities, FIE in Madrid offers excellent opportunities outside the classroom for students to gain first-hand insight into Spain's rich history and contemporary culture. A comprehensive on-site orientation, fieldwork, guest lectures and site visits are integrated into the Madrid curriculum. Day trips to the stunning towns of Segovia and Toledo complement the classroom experience.
Location
Based at the prestigious Universidad Europea de Madrid (UEM) just south of Madrid, FIE's program presents a unique combination of linguistic, academic and cultural elements, all carefully blended together to create an unforgettable learning experience. The academic program has been designed to give students a thorough insight into key aspects of Spain's past and present. The program offers an exciting combination of Spanish language, culture and history classes, with opportunities to directly enroll in courses with UEM students and pursue independent research projects if desired.
Madrid
The city offers the visitor all the famous elements of Spanish life -- fiestas, paella, tapas, soccer, bullfights and flamenco dancing - combined with excellent museums and art galleries (including the world famous Museo del Prado), a warm climate, friendly people and a truly unforgettable nightlife. 'La Marcha,' as the city's nightlife is known, sees Madrid's streets full of people when the sun goes down, old and young alike enjoying eating, drinking and dancing into the early hours of the morning.
Students on the semester program will take an intensive language course, a one-credit language-partner course and a Hispanic Culture course. They will choose the rest of their courses from UEM's list of electives in business, communication, the humanities and science, all of which are taught in Spanish. To qualify for this program, students must have a minimum of 4 semesters of college-level Spanish or the equivalent, and demonstrate upper-intermediate to advanced language proficiency during the application process.
Hispanic Culture (4 credits)
Taught in Spanish, this course introduces visiting students to several key cultural aspects of Spain's heritage and contemporary culture.
Intensive Language Course (4 credits)
Developing Spanish language skills is a key factor in deciding to complete a study abroad semester in Spain. FIE in Madrid is open to students with an advanced level of ability and the language component enables all participants to develop their skills through a range of class-based activities.
Elective Courses
One of the highlights of FIE in Madrid is the direct enrollment in UEM's regular list of electives, together with Spanish students. These courses offer a great opportunity for good Spanish speakers to study alongside Spanish students. Students may choose courses in business, communication, the humanities and science.
