Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Located in eastern Africa along the shores of the Indian Ocean, the modern nation of Tanzania became independent from its various colonial masters in the mid-1960s. Though it is a poor nation, it is safe, stable, multiethnic, and polyreligious.
Tanzania has a reputation as a tourist destination, and with good reason. From the snows of Kilimanjaro, the great plains of the Serengeti, and the sandy beaches of Zanzibar, the country is endowed with a spectacular natural beauty.
The city of Dar es Salaam, the largest in Tanzania, is a teeming, coastal metropolis with a humid climate tempered by steady sea breezes. The nearest airport, Julius K. Nyerere International Airport (IATA Code: DAR), is serviced by several European, African, and Asian airlines. Dar es Salaam features modern amenities such as shopping centers, movie theaters, and an array of entertainment options.
The 15-week Program:
The University of Dar es Salaam is the oldest public university in Tanzania, and enjoys an outstanding reputation for intellectual excellence. Many of the faculty have been educated in the U.S. and Europe, and the university hosts several hundred visiting exchange students each year. Professors incorporate a mix of traditional lecture, small group work and tutorials, and directed independent work. Examinations are less frequent than in the United States and comprise a greater percentage of the grade.
* Students receive a two-week intensive language immersion in Kiswahili, as well as cultural orientation, so they can navigate comfortably in Tanzania.
* Five courses (15 credits) per semester: one of these must focus on Tanzanian or East African content. Courses are taught in English.
* Classes are a mix of lecture, small group work, tutorials, and directed independent work. Students have online access to the Fairfield University library.
* All students will work at the Loyola (Jesuit) high school in Dar es Salaam, as well as with the Jesuit community in teaching, health promotion, literacy, and other types of projects. Fairfield will try to align service experiences with a student's academic interests.
* Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.8
