  • Description

    U.S. College Students for Ethiopia (USCSE) provides college students from the United States the opportunity to intern with Ethiopian-led organizations headquartered in Ethiopia and engage in a community service project empowering local youth. Applications are now being accepted for the Summer 2012 program!

    The project's mission is to: tackle the shortage of a skilled and educated workforce in Ethiopia by bridging the communication and access gap between U.S. college students and Ethiopian organizations, create a thriving environment for volunteerism and community engagement in Ethiopia, and raise consciousness of service to Ethiopia among Ethiopian-American college students.

    Internships are available across a wide range of fields, such as microfinance, medical, business, development, and many more. Interns will reside in a guest house arranged by USCSE in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Please note that USCSE does not provide financial assistance.

  • Highlights

    - Participants will be matched with host organizations in Ethiopia based on their credentials and interests
    - Interns will live together in a guest house in Addis Ababa which is prearranged by the USCSE coordinators
    - USCSE interns facilitate a six-week Youth Community Dialogue with counterpart Addis Ababa University students
    - Participants will gain crucial skills and knowledge that will fortify their career development during their internship. Through the Youth Community Dialogue, they will have an invaluable opportunity to work with local youth and establish lasting relationships with Addis Ababa University students.

  • Qualifications

    - Full-time undergraduate student at an accredited college or university in the U.S.
    - Grade Point Average of at least 3.0
    - Demonstrated leadership in extracurricular activities, previous internships, or work

    Interns are selected through a competitive two-tier process. Candidates initially submit an application consisting of a transcript, resume, list of references, and three essays. Then, top applicants are invited to interview with USCSE management. Once selected, interns are assigned to host organizations based on their credentials and interests. USCSE ensures that at least half of its interns are of Ethiopian descent.

    EGI is a nonprofit organization, and therefore interns are expected to provide their own financial support. A financial estimate for the program is :

    The mission of the Ethiopian Global Initiative is to combine and capture the social and intellectual capital of students and professionals to further engineer the transformation of Ethiopia by engaging a new generation of socially responsible leaders. In partnership with leading public and private sector organizations, the Ethiopian Global Initiative aims to undertake and support sustainable developmental endeavors in Ethiopia. The Initiative also aims to promote the interests of Ethiopians globally by serving as a catalyst for community-based projects that promote civic engagement and economic prosperity.
