The Program: Gyeongbuk Education Board's Independent School Districts
2 expat teachers for each school: Couples and Friends can teach together in the same school
Commencement: June, July, August 2010
The program was designed to create a learning milieu for Elementary pupils to learn to communicate in English, partly by learning how to think in English with the least possible involvement of Korean language in the learning curb. Objectives include teaching the students how to use the language spontaneously and orally, linking meaning with the target language. To do so a direct co-relation between the concepts and English is established through the use of regalia, pictures, story board, pantomime, and various audio-visual aids provided by the district.
Features:
* Classroom instruction is conducted primarily in the target language.
* Everyday vocabulary and sentences are taught.
* Oral communication skills are built up in a carefully traded progression organized around question-and-answer exchanges between teachers and students in small, intensive classes.
* Grammar is taught inductively.
* New teaching points are taught through modeling and practice.
* Concrete vocabulary is taught through demonstration, objects, and pictures; abstract vocabulary is taught by association of ideas.
* Both speech and listening comprehension are taught.
* Correct pronunciation and grammar are emphasized
Team Teaching Scheme
Although, ideally the goal of the program is to carry on the entire English learning experience only in English, it is not exclusively done by the ex-pat teacher. As per the board's procedure, each native teacher is paired with a Korean English teacher to successfully prepare and execute every lesson for the whole school year. The Korean English teacher is primarily task to handle issues of classroom management and collaborate with instruction and class preparation.
