The English as a Second Language (ESL) Center at Mississippi State University provides credit and noncredit courses in English as a Second Language. ESL Center courses are designed to help students develop English proficiency for any desired purpose.
After completing our program, some students enjoy the benefits of their new English skills back in their home countries. Others choose to continue their education in American universities.
Students who have applied and received conditional admission to Mississippi State University's Graduate School earn Mississippi State University credit from ESL Center classes as they fulfill the requirements of their conditional admission.
Whatever your reason for learning English, we are confident we can serve you.
At least 20 hours of instruction are provided each week. Average class size is 12 students. Four certificate programs are available to the students: Foundations, Basic Mastery, General Mastery, and Professional Mastery.
The content of the core curriculum for each program is focused on literacy skills, vocabulary, reading, writing, and grammar. Listening and speaking skills are practiced in in each class. Additional attention to listening andspeaking skills is available through elective courses and the conversation partners program, both of which are included in the cost of the program.
To help students learn English as fast as possible, out-of-class homework is given regularly and use of our listening and computer labs is strongly encouraged.
