Pamplona is so much more than "San Fermines" and the Running of the Bulls. Learn Spanish here and get to know the true Pamplona: a tranquil, safe city with a high quality of life, phenomenal cuisine and a lively night scene, perfect for enjoying the many charms of northern Spain.
Pamplona, or "Iruña" in Basque, is the capital city of the Autonomous Community of Navarre. Navarre borders France to the north, Basque Country to the west, La Rioja to the southwest and Aragón to the south and east. This excellent location affords both geographical diversity and natural beauty. On any given weekend, you can take a short trip to discover San Sebastian's pristine beaches, the Pyrenees mountain range or La Rioja's famous vineyards.
Getting around the city of Pamplona is easy. You can walk from one extreme to the other in less than an hour or use the affordable, efficient bus system. Another impressive Pamplona fact is that parks and pedestrian areas make up more than 20% of the urban landscape. Walking the streets of this clean, lush city, you'll observe plenty of monuments, museums and other cultural attractions that retell Pamplona's rich history, which stretches back before Roman times.
Pamplona's approximately 180,000 residents speak little English and the city is still under the tourist radar. Therefore, you'll enjoy an excellent opportunity to practice your language skills in a typical setting. Although some natives speak the Basque language, it's not commonly heard on the streets and the local Spanish accent is especially clear and easy for foreigners to understand. Pamplona is also home to two large universities which lend the city a young, open feel.
